Radiology Post Renal Biopsy

Discharge Instructions

 

 

 

Diet

  • Resume previous diet

  • Avoid Alcoholic beverages

Activity

  • Do not lift more than 10 pounds for seven days after biopsy.

  • May return to work 2 days following discharge.

  • May resume regular activities 7 days after biopsy, excluding contact sports.

  • No contact sports for 14 days after biopsy.

Safety

If you received sedation for your procedure, you should avoid the following for 24 hours:

  • Operate a motor vehicle, machinery, or power tools.

  • Drink any alcoholic beverages.

  • Make any important decisions, such as to sign any legal papers.

  • Perform any activity that requires physical coordination or mental alertness.

  • Take any additional sedatives.

Care for your incision

You may shower 24 hours after the procedure. Remove the Band-Aid, clean the site gently with ONLY soap and water. Dry thoroughly. Cover the site with a clean Band-Aid for at least 3 days. Do not sit in a tub or pool for 5 days or until site heals.

Do not use topical ointment or powder on the site.

Inspect site daily for signs of infection (redness, warmth to touch, drainage or poorly healing incision.)

Normal Observation

Soreness, tenderness, and/or bruising at biopsy site that could last two (2) weeks.

Mild oozing from site—apply gentle pressure.

Medications: If you take blood thinners such as Aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, etc., hold these medications for five days after biopsy unless instructed otherwise by your physician.

Be sure to continue to take your blood pressure medications.

Note: High Blood Pressure may increase your risk for bleeding.

 

 

 Go to the Emergency Room if any of the following symptoms occur:

  • Feel faint, sweat profusely or experience a sudden onset of weakness, increase in pain, swelling at the biopsy site, or saturation of the dressing.

  • Upper back or chest pain, shortness of breath, skin color changes, or sudden onset of anxiety.

  • Notice any blood in your urine

  • Temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit

 

If any of these symptoms occur within one week of your biopsy, it could be a sign of bleeding. If you have any questions please call the Nephrology office at (662) 844-4711 or 1-800-344-4711. After 5 pm or on weekends, please call (662)377-3000 and have the operator page the Nephrologist on call.
